How to choose the right stairlift for your home

Complete guide to choosing the right stairlift for your staircase, budget and mobility needs.

Why a stairlift changes lives

Installing a stairlift is often a life-changing decision. Whether for yourself or a loved one, regaining the freedom to move between floors of your home effortlessly and without the risk of falling is a genuine relief. In Luxembourg, more and more families are making this choice to maintain independence at home and avoid a costly move.

But how do you choose the right model from all the available options? This comprehensive guide walks you through the decision step by step.

Straight or curved staircase?

The type of staircase is the first decisive criterion. A straight staircase, with no bends or intermediate landings, is the simplest and most economical case. A standard straight rail is sufficient, and installation is quick, often completed in half a day.

For a curved, winding or spiral staircase, the rail must be custom-manufactured. This is where the precision of the home measurement comes in. At MPG, we use a digital 3D measurement system that guarantees a rail perfectly adapted to every curve, angle and landing of your staircase.

The Modul-Air Smart by Otolift is particularly suited to complex staircases thanks to its ultra-compact monorail, the slimmest on the market, which adapts to virtually any configuration.

Indoor or outdoor?

If your staircase is outdoors, for example, to access your garden, terrace or garage, you need a stairlift designed to withstand the elements. Outdoor models are equipped with protection against rain, frost and UV rays, as well as a protective cover.

All the stairlifts we install can be configured as outdoor versions, with materials resistant to Luxembourg's weather conditions.

Seat or platform?

Most stairlifts are equipped with a seat, complete with safety belt and footrest. This is the ideal solution for people who can sit comfortably.

For wheelchair users, a platform stairlift is required. Models such as the PLG7 or the PLK8 allow you to go up and down the stairs while remaining seated in your wheelchair, in complete safety.

Weight capacity and comfort

The weight capacity varies by model, generally between 120 and 300 kg. It's important to choose a model suited to your weight to ensure optimal operation and maximum lifespan.

Seat comfort is also essential: swivel seat for easier access, adjustable armrests, padded seat and ergonomic design. The Two by Otolift, for example, offers an exceptionally comfortable seat with automatic rotation at the top of the stairs.

Rail type and footprint

There are two main types of rails: monorail and double rail. The monorail (used by the Modul-Air Smart) is more discreet and takes up less space on the staircase. The double rail (as on the Two) offers increased stability and a smoother ride.

In both cases, the rail is fixed directly to the stair treads, not to the wall. This means no structural modifications are needed. The staircase remains usable for other family members thanks to the foldable seat and footrest.

Budget and financing

The price of a stairlift varies considerably depending on the type of staircase, the chosen model and the options. In Luxembourg, dependency insurance (assurance dépendance) can cover a significant portion of the cost. MPG assists you with all administrative procedures, from the initial application to installation.

Essential questions to ask yourself

Before making your decision, ask yourself these questions:
- Is my staircase straight or curved?
- Is the installation for indoors or outdoors?
- Can the user sit on a seat or do they need a platform?
- What weight capacity is required?
- What is my budget, and am I eligible for dependency insurance?
